About Us
Hi, and thanks for visiting SmartPAYE.nz. I run this website, and I want to explain in plain words what it is, why I built it and what you can expect from it. I think you should know who is behind a tool before you trust it with your salary figures.
What is SmartPAYE.nz?
SmartPAYE.nz is a free online PAYE calculator for New Zealand. You enter your income, choose how often you are paid and add a few tax details. The calculator then shows an estimate of your gross pay, PAYE, ACC earners’ levy and take home pay. It works for weekly, fortnightly, four weekly, monthly and annual income, so it suits most common salary and wage situations.
I made it for everyday people. Maybe you have just received a job offer and want to know what will land in your bank account. Maybe you are comparing two salaries. Or maybe you simply want to check that your latest payslip looks right. This tool is here for all of those moments.
Why did I start SmartPAYE.nz?
When I looked at how tax information was shown online, I noticed the same problem again and again. Some pages were too technical and hard to follow. Others were too thin and gave you a number without telling you where it came from.
I wanted something in the middle. A calculator that is quick to use, sitting next to pages that explain things in simple language. What does PAYE actually mean? Why is your whole salary not taxed at one rate? Why does KiwiSaver change your take home pay? Why might your payslip be different from an online estimate? I try to answer these questions on every page, without heavy jargon or confusing terms.
Where do the numbers come from?
I base the calculator on the figures published by Inland Revenue. That includes the 2026/27 income tax bands, the ACC earners’ levy rate and the KiwiSaver contribution rules. Inland Revenue and ACC are the official voices on these topics, so they are my main sources. When you read a rate or a threshold on this website, it comes from their published information, not from guesswork.
Who is this website for?
SmartPAYE.nz is useful for many kinds of people:
- Employees who want to know their take home pay before or after a pay rise
- People with a second job who need to understand secondary tax
- Part time and casual workers whose pay changes from week to week
- Anyone with a student loan or a KiwiSaver contribution
- Job seekers who are comparing two or more offers
- Small employers and payroll staff who want a quick second check
If you fit into any of these groups, you are in the right place.
What do I promise you?
I keep a few simple promises to every visitor:
- It stays free. The calculator is free to use, and there is no limit on how many times you can use it.
- I use plain language. If a tax term is needed, I explain it in simple words.
- I keep it current. The New Zealand tax year starts on 1 April, and I update the site when the rates change.
- I am honest about limits. An estimate is only an estimate, and I will always say so.
- I listen. If you find a mistake, I want to hear about it and fix it.
What are the limits of this website?
I want to be very clear about this part. SmartPAYE.nz is not Inland Revenue, and it is not a government website. I am not a registered tax agent, accountant or financial adviser, and nothing on this website is personal tax advice.
The calculator gives an estimate based on the information you enter. Your real payslip can be different if you use a different tax code, if you have a student loan, if your KiwiSaver rate is not the standard one, if you have a second income or if your employer makes other deductions. For official answers about your own tax, please check with Inland Revenue, your employer’s payroll team or a qualified tax professional.
How do I keep the site accurate?
Whenever Inland Revenue or ACC announce a change, I review the affected pages and the calculator. I check the tax bands, the levy rate and the KiwiSaver rates, and I update the content so it matches the latest official information.
I also read the feedback that visitors send me. Many good improvements on this website started with a short message from someone who noticed that a sentence was unclear or a number looked different from their payslip. If that is you, please do write to me.
How does this website pay for itself?
Running a website costs money. There are hosting costs, tool costs and a lot of my own time. To keep the calculator free for you, I may show advertising on some pages. If I do, the ads will be clearly separate from your results, and they will never change your calculation. I will never sell the figures you type into the calculator. You can read more about how I handle your information in my Privacy Policy.
What is next for SmartPAYE.nz?
I plan to keep growing the site with more tools and guides that make New Zealand pay and tax easier to understand. You will already see links to some of them, such as the tax rates and brackets guide, the tax code guide, the secondary tax calculator, the bonus calculator and the hourly rate to salary calculator. I will keep improving these and adding new ones based on what people ask for.
How can you reach me?
If you have a question, a suggestion or a correction, please visit the Contact Us page. I read every message myself, and I do my best to reply as soon as I can.
Thank you for using SmartPAYE.nz. I hope it saves you time and makes your next payslip a little less confusing.
